-- In spring 2010, Rebecca Tokarsky and Laura Zalewsky, two students in the biology teacher certification program supervised by assistant professor of science Matthew Maurer, developed a workshop for middle school students that combined knowledge of sciences, mathematics and art. As the result of the successful summer program, the students and faculty were invited to submit an article for publication in Science Scope, the middle school science journal from the National Science Teachers Association. The article is called "Creating a smART Camp". The camp, Spark Your Imagination, combined science, mathematics and art into a concept the authors termed smART. Thirty-one local seventh through ninth grade students attended the camp for five days. Throughout the camp students were introduced to multiple sciences including biology, environmental science, chemistry and physics.
