-- Are Happy Meal toys bad for the environment? Toys in Happy Meals and other fast food children's meals may contain levels of lead high enough to potentially contaminate landfills, according to a scientific analysis of fast food toys by a team of Robert Morris University environmental science students and professors. Led by students Andrew Lorenzi and Benjamin Mentzer and professor Dan Short, says that electronic fast food toys are a "previously unreported and significant source of … lead and chromium" to the soil around landfills.

-- The Robert Morris Signature Leadership Award recognizes 13 graduating students who have provided extraordinary leadership and significant contributions to the university and community, and they will receive an award at the annual Student Excellence Dinner in April along with their names engraved on the Signature Leadership plaque located in the Nicholson Center.

The nominees should possess the following characteristics:

1.  Active participation in university life

2.  Demonstrated leadership experience

3.  Scholarly and educational achievements

4.  Commitment to community service

5.  Graduation in August 2016, December 2016, or May 2017

If you wish to nominate one or more students for this leadership award, please write a brief letter of recommendation for each student and send it via email by Friday, March 17, 2017 to signatureleadership@rmu.edu.

-- Every year during the Memorial Day weekend many of the RMU employees ride their bicycles from Western PA to Washington D.C. Riders of all levels are encouraged to join! If you are interested or have questions about the ride, please contact Don Smith (smithd@rmu.edu) or Todd Hamer (hamer@rmu.edu). Also, there will be training rides this spring open to anyone to feel out the riding process. Please spread the word to students, friends and family, and anyone you think will enjoy the ride.

-- RMU Island Sports Center Director Dave Hanson stepped into the limelight this month during the 40th anniversary of Slap Shot, university professor John Clark was called upon to give his insights into NHL outdoor games, while associate professor Steve Foreman was tapped to discuss the latest financial reports from the Allegheny Health Network. -- Congratulations to Lauren Rauscher for being accepted to the 2017 HERS Institute at Bryn Mawr this summer. HERS attracts hundreds of diverse and dynamic women leaders each year seeking to attend the Institute to share and learn from multiple institutional perspectives with guidance from women faculty with experience in higher education, national academic organizations, government and foundations. -- The annual Women’s History Month Luncheon will take place on Wednesday, March 29 from Noon – 1:30 p.m. in the Sewall Center (3rd Floor). The keynote speaker will be Ms. Arlinda Moriarty, President and CEO of Moriarty Consultants. RMU’s annual Woman of Achievement award will also be announced at the event.

The luncheon is free for students and $10 for faculty, staff, and guests.  We invite you to host a table for up to six students that you ask to be your guests. Please RSVP to the Office of Student Life at studentlife@rmu.edu no later than Friday, March 24. Call 412-397-6489 with questions.
