Giving Back Award

Yasmin Purohit, Robert Morris University's chief diversity and inclusion officer and Title IX coordinator, has been named a recipient of the 2017 Giving Back Award for Administrators by Insight Into Diversity magazine.

The April issue of the higher education magazine and website announced the awards, which honor 39 college and university administrators for their commitment to diversity through leadership and for giving back to their campus and community.

Insight Into Diversity recognized Purohit's work since 2013, when she became RMU's first high-level diversity executive, in establishing the Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Equity and developing programs to measure and increase the numbers of minorities and underrepresented populations in student recruitment and retention and staff and faculty hiring. Purohit also works with various external organizations, including Vibrant Pittsburgh, the Ellis School, the Community Relations Council of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, and Pittsburgh Action Against Rape.

Purohit said she is grateful for the personal recognition and for the focus it places on the work that she and other diversity advocates do.

"Diversity, especially at academic institutions like RMU, becomes the textured, multi-hued yarn that contributes to the fabric of an inclusive society," she said.

Purohit came to RMU in 2006 as an assistant professor of human resource management, having previously taught as a professor at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia. She earned her Ph.D. from Drexel University in organizational sciences, a master's in industrial/organization psychology from the University of Pune, and a bachelor's in child psychology from Bombay University.

Earlier this month, Purohit was back in her native India, where she was honored at the 25th World Human Resource Development Congress in Mumbai with a Global Diversity Leadership Award.
