Swiss Students Partner with Marketing Majors

Senior marketing students Melissa Reinbold, Justin Mayfield, and Megan Gold, along with their professor Jill Maher, department head of marketing, spent eight days in St. Gallen, Switzerland, collaborating on a research plan with three Swiss students at FHS St. Gallen, a partner university with RMU. The team is working on marketing research for an industrial client based in Switzerland, who is releasing a product in the United States.
On their first day, the students participated in intercultural training with a counselor, followed by a cultural excursion in order to bond with the three Swiss students. They did an "escape room," went to a commercial kitchen to try cooking the local cuisine, and took a personality quiz and compared their results. Reinbold says she felt overwhelmed at a fast-paced sandwich shop, until the Swiss students split themselves up among the Americans to help them translate and order.
"It’s a favorite memory for me, just watching six young people become very good friends really quickly," says Maher. “I think it really speaks to how similar millennials are around the globe."
There is a final presentation in April, and the Swiss students will be coming to Pittsburgh for a week to make the presentation to their client. They hope to present their client with something that will exceed their expectations. In September, there will be an award ceremony in Switzerland, where the projects are evaluated. The students hope to be in the top three projects that are recognized.
The School of Business plans to continue the relationship with St. Gallen, hopefully working on two projects next year. Michelle Patrick, dean of the School of Business, personally joined the RMU group in Switzerland to observe the program and plan for future projects.
