Tomlin Talks to Grads

Monday, May 8, 2017

Giving the address at this year's commencement ceremony, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin delivered a rousing challenge that combined a sideline pep talk with more reflective inspiration for the 200 master's and doctoral students in the audience.

"Trust your preparation. Chase your passion. Apply pressure," said Tomlin. "But I implore you as you go live life — be thoughtful. Be thoughtful in what it is you do, be thoughtful of those that you're around, be thoughtful of the communities in which you live. Be thoughtful and considerate of the impact that you have, and let that be a conscious part of your daily decision-making."

Tomlin was awarded an honorary doctorate of letters from RMU, as were the late Steelers chairman Dan Rooney and Patricia Rooney, a trustee emerita and former adjunct faculty member.

On Saturday, more than 700 undergraduate students packed Sewall Arena for the final university event there before it is torn down to be replaced by the UPMC Events Center. UMass Boston Chancellor J. Keith Motley, a Pittsburgh native, delivered the Saturday commencement address.
