Learning to Lead

Lauren Rauscher, director of the RMU Women’s Leadership and Mentorship Program, spent two weeks at Bryn Mawr College this summer developing her own leadership skills.

The associate professor of sociology joined 68 women in higher education from across the country in July at the 2017 HERS Institute, an intensive program designed to engage and prepare faculty, staff, and administrators for leadership roles in higher education. Sessions at the institute included discussions on inclusion, managing and leading change, fundraising, and negotiation.

“The HERS Institute was incredibly powerful," said Rauscher. "Most valuable was the time I spent developing a leadership project with the insightful feedback from my new colleagues. HERS does a remarkable job curating the program participants. Living and learning with these university leaders was a game changer in my professional development."

Rauscher plans to implement what she learned into the Women’s Leadership and Mentorship Program which seeks to attract, retain and empower women students so they can achieve leadership roles both on campus and after graduation. Through the WLMP, students are exposed to new ideas, perspectives, people, tools, and opportunities that push them to think and act critically around issues of women in leadership.
