-- RMU recently received a $10,000 grant from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine-Middle Atlantic Region to purchase 10 Apple iPad2 devices and incorporate them into nursing education. The initial pilot will enable RMU nursing students participating in clinical rotations at UPMC Passavant to integrate iPads and numerous software apps into various aspects of clinical practice and patient education during the Spring, 2012 semester. Managing the project from RMU will be Bruce Johnston, associate professor of learning resources and health sciences, and Valerie Howard, associate professor of nursing. Susan Hoolahan from UPMC Passavant also will be a project manager.

-- The RMU Concert Choir will host their Winter Performance on Saturday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m. in Massey Theater. Refreshments will be provided, and the event is free and open to the public.

Ben Campbell, assistant professor of engineering, was an invited speaker at the Westinghouse Science Honors Institute on Nov. 19. The institute gathers more than 300 high school juniors from western Pennsylvania who are nominated by their schools for their scholastic achievement and interest in science. The students attend a Saturday morning lecture series which includes hands-on science and engineering activities. Campbell presented the students an overview of his research in laser technology and described his education background and the career path that led to these accomplishments. This was the fifth time that Campbell has been invited to speak to this group of students.

-- John Lawson, associate professor of English studies, and third-year D.Sc. students Mary Beth Lang and Steven King took home the best-of-paper awards, donated by President Dell'Omo, at the research conference sponsored by the D.Sc. program Nov. 18. Lawson won the President's Award for Best Theoretical Paper for “Narrative Frames of Keynesian Economic Commentators” and Lang and King won the Debons Award for Best Applied Paper for “Federated Searching: Turning Metadata into Information.”

A Big Colonial Thank You!...For the fourth year in a row, the RMU Department of Athletics spearheaded a Toys for Tots drive in conjunction with the Beaver County Marine Corps Reserve. This year's haul netted a record 123 toys thanks to the generosity of our fans! Also, thanks to the efforts of the RMU Band, it raised $225 for the Beaver County Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots. 2012 NCAA® Men’s Frozen Four® Tickets On Sale Now!...The 2012 NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Frozen Four will be held April 5 and 7 at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Fla.Tickets are $195 each and are "all-session" which includes the two national championship semifinal games on April 5 and the national championship game on April 7.
