Pittsburgh -- Robert Morris University's master of science programs in competitive intelligence systems and Internet information systems have been ranked No. 17 in U.S. News & World Report's Best Online Graduate Computer Information Technology Programs for 2013.

Among the other universities in the top 20 were such prestigious institutions as the University of Southern California, Virginia Tech, and Boston University. The only other university in the region to edge out Robert Morris was Penn State, ranked No. 5.

"We are very pleased with this high ranking," says John C. Turchek, interim head of RMU's Department of Computer and Information Systems. "Although we offer our graduate computing degree programs at both at the Moon campus and at RMU Downtown in the Heinz 57 Center, we found it important to develop and deliver quality online versions of these degrees in order to help serve the needs of students who require more flexibility in their education."

In order to compile its list, U.S. News & World Report surveyed 308 institutions nationwide that granted a master's degree in computer engineering or computer science and had at least one program with ABET accreditation. The rankings were based on various factors including "admissions selectivity, faculty credentials, and academic and career support services offered to students." RMU’s programs were ranked No. 3 for faculty credentials and training.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, computing professionals will be in high demand through 2020, partially due to the large number of baby boomers due to retire in the next decade. Turchek says that RMU's online programs are helping to meet this need by making a degree more easily attainable for the working professional.

"Our online graduate programs give students another way to earn that crucial degree so that they can further enhance their computing careers or change to careers in computing," he says.

RMU's M.S. in Internet information systems degree program prepares information technology professionals to develop and maintain information systems for corporations, organizations and businesses. The M.S. in competitive intelligence systems degree program educates business and information systems professionals to systematically and ethically gather, analyze, and manage internal and external information that can affect an organization's plans, decisions, and operations.

Robert Morris University, founded in 1921, is a private, four-year institution with an enrollment of approximately 5,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The university offers 60 undergraduate and 20 graduate programs. An estimated 22,000 alumni live and work in western Pennsylvania.
