Pittsburgh Speakers Series Announces 2014-15 Season

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Speakers Series announced the speakers for its 2014-15 season - seven lectures on Wednesday evenings at 8 p.m. at Heinz Hall.  Presented by Robert Morris University and powered by Trib Total Media, and celebrating its 13th season this fall, the series will feature award-winning actor Alan Alda (Oct. 8, 2014), former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard (Oct. 29, 2014), former FBI Director Robert S. Mueller, III (Nov. 19, 2014). award-winning journalist Arianna Huffington (Jan. 14, 2015), 21st century warfare expert P.W. Singer (Feb. 18, 2015), Pulitzer Prize-winning author David McCullough (Mar. 25, 2015), and futurist and TV/radio host Michio Kaku (Apr. 29, 2015).

From Hawkeye Pierce on M*A*S*H  to Arnold Vinick on The West Wing, Alan Alda has been a staple on American television for more than four decades. He earned 32 Emmy nominations and six Emmy and Golden Globe Awards. Well known for California Suite, The Four Seasons and other movies, he also was nominated for an Academy Award for The Aviator. 

Julia Gillard’s political career was crowned by her service as Prime Minister of Australia and leader of the Australian Labor Party from 2010 to 2013. She was the first woman to hold either position.  Born in Wales, Gillard moved with her family to Adelaide when she was a child. Her earlier political career included numerous cabinet and shadow cabinet positions. 

After leading a Marine rifle platoon in Vietnam, Robert S. Mueller, III attended law school and started his career working in the U.S. Attorney’s offices in both San Francisco and Boston, and then in the U.S. Department of Justice. In 2001, he was nominated as FBI Director, starting in that position only one week before the Sept. 11 attacks. 

Considered by Forbes magazine as one of the Most Influential Women in Media, Arianna Huffington (photo at: is best known as the founder of the news website, The Huffington Post. The site has become one of the most widely read, linked to, and frequently cited media brands on the Internet. In 2012, the site won a Pulitzer Prize for national reporting. 

P.W. Singer is considered the preeminent specialist on 21st century warfare.  Currently a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, his work explores how science fiction has started to play out on modern day battlefields, with its emphasis on robotics and other technologies, as well as the implications of these developments for war, politics, ethics and law in our time.  

David McCullough is the acclaimed author of Truman, John Adams, and most recently, The Greater Journey. This two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award has been called a National Treasure. A gifted storyteller, he has narrated several PBS documentaries, including The Civil War and Napoleon, and the motion picture Seabiscuit. 

Known as a futurist and popularizer of science, Michio Kaku has written numerous books about physics and makes regular appearances on radio, television and film.  A frequent host of TV specials for the BBC, Discovery Channel, the History Channel and the Science Channel, he hosts a weekly, syndicated, one-hour radio program called Explorations.
