-- Gabriella Gasparich, a senior communication major, has won the 2014 Presidential Transformational Award, RMU's highest undergraduate honor. Gasparich previously won the university's Rising Star Award, Woman of Achievement Award, and the School of Communications and Information Systems Endowment Award. -- Students in the Communication Seminar Course, taught by University Professor Ann Jabro, have planned five community service events that have, thanks to the students' own PR efforts, generated significant media coverage, on WPXI-TV and in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review . In the fall students in the seminar raised nearly $6,000 for local nonprofits.

-- Junior communication student Nick Buzzelli has won the 2014 Pittsburgh Newspaper Guild Scholarship, a $1,500 award. He is the incoming editor-in-chief for RMU Sentry Media .

-- Three competitively selected panels organized by RMU students and faculty were featured at the Laurel Highlands Conference on Communication, which was held April 10-11 at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. "YouTube, iMovies and Course Content: Tales from Behind the Lens" featured research conducted in the courses Social Media and Public Relations and Public Relations Campaigns. Michelle Emanuele, Jennifer Eberly, Melissa Egnacheski, and Victoria Della Valle were the presenters.

Sarah Cave, Justin Fuss, and Jacob Cimba presented the results of their Media Management course semester research project titled "Management and Strategic Growth in the Cable Industry: The Discovery Network." Ann Jabro presented research conducted while a Plank Fellow at BMW North America. Her paper was titled,"BMW and Social Media: Who Controls the Message?"

PERSONAL MENTION

-- Joyce Ott, assistant professor of nursing and director of the RN-MSN and MSN programs, has been appointed to the board of the Central Valley Education Foundation, which supports students, familiies, and communities in the Central Valley School District in Beaver County. Ott also was commissioned recently as a faith community nurse for St. Frances Cabrini parish.

YOU'RE INVITED

-- The Spring Senior Showcase, presented by the Media Arts Department, will run from April 24 through May 13 and highlight the outstanding work of RMU's graduating seniors. The showcase celebrates the accomplishments of the university's media arts students and lets visitors see the best work from RMU's TV/video, graphic design, web design, and photography programs. On Friday, April 25, from 5 to 9 p.m., selected creative projects from senior media arts BFA students will be featured in a bonus art show directed by Professor Hyla Willis. The show will take place in the Wheatley Center Atrium Critique Room. Regular gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

-- The eighth annual Undergraduate Research Conference  takes place today, April 25, on the third floor of the Sewall Center, starting at noon.

-- The RMU-SVA is having a motorcycle ride in honor of our nation's Veterans at 11 a.m. April 26, meeting at the Sewall Center and traveling to the VFW post in Weirton, W. Va. The fee is $15 per bike and $5 per passenger. The fee includes lunch, a chance at prizes, and a T-shirt (one per bike – first come, first served). All profits will benefit the RMU Student Veterans Emergency Fund. For more information contact Chase Thomas, president of the RMU-SVA at crtst8@mail.rmu.edu.

-- The Office of Multicultural Life will screen Rex, a documentary about the late RMU Communication Professor Rex Crawley  at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 30, in Massey Theater. To RSVP or for more information, call 412-974-6488 or email snyderv@rmu.edu .
