Dalton Signs Contract with Detroit Lions

Friday, May 16, 2014
Moon Township, Pa. – A.J. Dalton, a member of the Robert Morris University football team for the past four seasons, signed a free agent contract with the Detroit Lions of the National Football League Saturday evening.

Dalton made 37 starts in his four years for the Colonials on the offensive line, beginning his career at guard before shifting to left tackle for the majority of his tenure.

Dalton was selected as an All-American by The Sports Network after his recently completed senior campaign, one of 11 Colonials in program history to earn that honor.

"It's truly a blessing, and I'm happy to get the opportunity," Dalton said. "I'm looking forward to representing RMU and am happy to be joining a great organization in the Detroit Lions. I'm ready to get into camp, make an impact and try to make the team and hopefully give something to the Lions that they didn't have before."

Dalton will partake in the Lions' rookie minicamp on dates that have yet to be announced.

Dalton was the leader of RMU's offensive line in 2013, providing a key veteran presence to the unit. He started all 11 games this past year for the second time in three years. Dalton made each of his final 31 starts at left tackle where he was charged with protecting the quarterback's blind side. Dalton was one of the factors that helped RMU win the time of possession battle in every one of its conference games in 2013, a fact that helped the Colonials lead the league in time of possession within Northeast Conference play. Additionally, Dalton allowed only one sack during his entire senior season, a fact that helped him earn All-NEC First Team honors.

Dalton was part of an offensive line in 2012 that helped Robert Morris rush for at least 170 yards in four consecutive games, one of only two such occurrences by the Colonials since 2001. He was also a starter on RMU's 2010 NEC championship squad that earned the first national playoff berth in league history.
