In an inspirational commencement address at Christopher Newport University on May 14, Chris Howard offered some direct advice for the graduating class.

"Be yourself, be accountable, be courageous," he told seniors at the Newport News, Va., institution, which is named for the captain of one of the ships that brought the original settlers to the Jamestown colony in Virginia.

Paul Trible Jr., president of Christopher Newport and a former three-term congressman and one-term senator from Virginia, is a graduate of Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, where Howard was president before coming to RMU. “Chris Howard’s life embodies the virtues of academic excellence, leadership, honor and service that define the Christopher Newport experience," said Trible.

Christopher Newport University presented Howard with an honorary doctorate of laws at the ceremony, held outdoors on the university's great lawn.
