ENVS3000 - Envir Chem For Engnrng & Lab
Spring 2003

This course provides students with an introduction to the chemical basis of environmental issues and the environmental consequences of modern technology with an emphasis on water, air, and soil pollution and chemistry. Areas covered are atmospheric pollution, cycling of chemicals in the environment and their status within the ecosystem, pollution and toxicology of trace and heavy metal and pesticides, ozone depletion, forest management, the greenhouse effect and the effect of man-made input, and environmental analytical techniques. The laboratory section will provide students with an introduction to sampling and measurement techniques used to characterize the environment. Chromatography, atomic spectroscopy, mass spectrometric, chromatographic and electrochemical techniques will be used with laboratory investigation. Much of the material will be covered in lecture. Problem sets and lab exercises will enhance material covered in lectures.
Prerequisite: CHEM1215 (NS119) (4 credits)
