Acquaints students with what is required for a doctoral dissertation and the necessary associated research process. The course includes three (3) threads, or major areas of study. The first provides the structure and groundwork for a workable dissertation. The second focuses on identifying an appropriate topic of interest for a dissertation and beginning the development of a related and relevant review of the literature. The third course thread bridges viable dissertation topics with concise problem statements and potential research methods. Students complete an extensive annotated bibliography and a scholarly argumentative paper, both based on a viable dissertation topic approved by the course instructor. This course is a prerequisite for Dissertation Seminar I, dedicated to the process of writing Chapter 1 of the student?s dissertation.

The course examines the theoretical dimensions of curriculum development. Assessment related topics such as reliability and validity of assessments, constructing classroom tests, constructing performance tasks and scoring rubrics, formative assessment in the classroom, and the uses and interpretation of test results will be addressed. Candidates will use instructional design principles, appropriate media elements, the systems approach, and simple multimedia development tools to provide a basis for multimedia project development. The focus of EDUC6800 encompasses incorporating social belonging and emotional safety into the classroom to enhance academic instruction. EDUC6800 explores the foundations of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) by introducing the concepts of social emotional well-being and the relationship between SEL and current research on student achievement with the integration of SEL into the curriculum and classroom instruction. Classroom applicable strategies and activities for establishing a social-emotional classroom culture and fostering each of the social-emotional components will be discussed so that educators can facilitate student?s learning, social and emotional growth, and success. Assessment related topics include self-reflective writing, journal article review and discussion board interactions. A major requirement of the course is the development of a SEL unit.

This course is designed to provide educators on research-based interventions used to support students who are at risk of mental health issues or students who have experienced trauma or adverse childhood experiences. Course activities will facilitate educator's understanding of mandated and best practices, such as TIC, and MTSS. Evidence based tools that can be implemented into the classroom along with crisis de-escalation will be reviewed. The course will require the development of a Trauma-informed Professional Development session as well as a Trauma Sensitivity Action Plan. Fifteen (15) hours of field experiences are required.

EDUC7002 - Curriculum/Instruc Internship

This course engages supervisor candidates in 360 hours of a performance based field experience and practicum that must be completed during the course of a school year. The candidate, guided by a university supervisor and a school district mentor, will design and implement a curriculum and instruction leadership plan that demonstrates their knowledge of and competence in each of the skills identified in the four Domains in the Pennsylvania Deparmtnet of Education's Framework for Leadership: Strategic/Cultural Leadership, Systems Leadership, Leadership for Learning and Professional and Community Leadership. After completing all activities in their leadership plan and required courses, the candidate will present their portfolio of achievements before a panel of RMU professors and administrators during an oral defense of their field experiences and practicum.
