Spring 2024

This graduate course will address cultural norms of individuals of varied racial and ethnic backgrounds. Students will be introduced to cultural rooting and progress to understanding universal aspects of culture, ie: kinship, religion, education, diet, art, politics, and economics. Health care from a global perspective will be emphasized. Understanding health problems related to social issues and life-ways is discussed as it relates to advanced nursing practice. Learners will discuss nursing leadership concepts related to setting a global agenda and promoting global health care. 3 Credits

This course is the first of a series of three administration courses designed to provide students with opportunities to observe, apply, analyze and discuss selected administrative and managerial skills and processes relevant to the practice of nursing administration. The seminar portion will provide content, discussion, and individual and group activities. A critical component of this course is the practicum with a designated preceptor who is employed full time in a selected site. The major focus of the practicum will be to provide both faculty guided and student initiated observational experiences, which will provide exposure to budgetary issues and other key administrative process skill sets (i.e., negotiation, conflict, management, etc.). General content for this course will include description of healthcare delivery systems, nursing's leadership role in healthcare administration, personnel management, budgetary development and control and key process issues related to managing people and groups. 3 credits

NURS8070 - Health Care Economics

Health Economics will acquaint students with how microeconomic / industrial organization principles may be applied to health care settings and health policy issues. Students will learn and apply economic principles and theory in the health care setting. The course will show how basic principles of demand and supply apply to health care. Students will study markets for health insurance, demand for hospital care, the market for primary care practitioners and the market for other forms of health care. The course will encompass theories of perfect competition and their limits in health care settings, as well as characteristics of monopoly, oligopoly and monopolistic competition. Economic and regulatory responses to market breakdown will be explored. Additional topics will include production functions for health, demand for hospitals and physicians, dynamic adjustment in health care markets, the concept of externalities, quality issues and quality signals and the implications of consumer sovereignty. Other topics include Medicare and Medicaid, international health system comparisons, behavioral economics and the likely implications of the Affordable Care Act for health care and health economics. Course concepts will also include optimization of resource use, production decisions, incentives, strategic interaction and economic distortions. 2 Credits

Issues of gender, race, culture, and ethnicity in aging adults that impact the expression of mental illness and responses to appropriate treatment will be examined.
