NURS2060 - Nurs Care Of The Aging Adult

Spring 2024

This course will emphasize a holistic approach to managing the nursing care of older adults using the curricular guidelines from American Association of Colleges of Nursing as a framework. The prevention and/or management of geriatric syndromes will incorporate the knowledge of normal physiological and psychological changes of aging, the application of age-appropriate assessment skills, and the identification of health promotion strategies to foster maintenance and independence. The importance of effective communication to facilitate ethical decision-making will be addressed, as well as the utilization of family, community, governmental, and inter-professional resources related to care of the older adult. Regulatory agencies, healthcare law, policy and advocacy will be explored within the context of patient quality and safety. The importance of integrating research into practice to improve outcomes for the geriatric population will also be emphasized.

This course introduces learners to Healthcare Concepts in Australia. With the National Healthcare System, Australia remains a global leader in providing comprehensive healthcare to the citizens. This course and study abroad experience will provide SNHS students an opportunity to explore global perspectives of Australia healthcare with an emphasis on the healthcare models, structures and delivery. Students will focus on the impact of healthcare systems on policy and practice by comparing and contrasting the public health services model of Australia with the current US healthcare system. Students will engage in discipline specific activities related to the development, implementation and evaluation of healthcare policies and practices within the country and will include presentations by University of the Sunshine Coast faculty members.

In this course students have an opportunity to examine health care in China. Students will learn about Chinese history, culture and health care in classes on the RMU campus and then will have the opportunity for a two week study trip to China with stops in Beijing, Shanghai and Nanjing. Final projects will be individualized to the students' majors. Students will meet 4 times in the spring semester prior to traveling to China. 3 Credits

This course introduces nursing research, based on the belief that research is integral to all levels of nursing practice. Students acquire the basic competencies needed to read, evaluate and interpret findings from clinical research studies. Use of technology in the research process is explored. Students examine opportunities to incorporate research findings into clinical practice and to become intelligent consumers of research.

NURS3050 - Nurs Care-Mothers/Newborns/Fam

Spring 2024

This course emphasizes the promotion of health for mothers and their families. Self-care and empowerment are an integral focus in examining women's health from a developmental perspective. The nursing process provides the framework for students to assess and therapeutically intervene in promoting healthy childbearing and care of the newborn. Emphasis is placed on nursing care of the woman, the fetus and the newborn within the family environment. Concepts of human development of individual, family and community form the context in examining the nursing role of the professional nurse. The effect of cultural, social, economic and ethical influences as well as the impact of health care technology is discussed. (3 lecture, 2 lab)

This course provides theoretical perspective, science-based knowledge, and principles needed by students to guide their application of the Nursing process and choice of nursing interventions for children from infancy through adolescence who are experiencing physiological alterations. Emphasis is on the use of the nursing process to identify functional and dysfunctional health patterns in children within the context of the family system. NURS4035 - Nclex Licensure Prep Success

Spring 2024

This Pass/Fail course serves as an NCLEX-RN/CAT examination preparation course. Students will work individually as well as in cooperative learning groups. Content will focus on content review, test-taking strategies, controlling test anxiety through locus of control, cognitive restructuring, and self-talk. The course assignments will include current issues affecting NCLEX first-time test-takers. Students will practice the above test-taking techniques through computer assisted instruction and weekly NCLEX-like questions. The course will not re-teach nursing content, with the exception of pharmacology and diagnostic studies, but rather reinforces important concepts based upon the NCLEX test Blueprint.

NURS4160 - Nurs Care Of The Aging Adult

This course will emphasize a holistic approach to managing the nursing care of older adults using the curricular guidelines from American Association of Colleges of Nursing as a framework. The prevention and/or management of geriatric syndromes will incorporate the knowledge of normal physiological and psychological changes of aging, the application of age-appropriate assessment skills, and the identification of health promotion strategies to foster maintenance and independence. The importance of effective communication to facilitate ethical decision-making will be addressed, as well as the utilization of family, community, governmental, and inter-professional resources related to care of the older adult. Regulatory agencies, healthcare law, policy and advocacy will be explored within the context of patient quality and safety. The importance of integrating research into practice to improve outcomes for the geriatric population will also be emphasized.
