Men’s Hockey Pulls Biggest Upset In RMU History, 4-2, Over #2 Notre Dame

The men’s hockey team pulled off the biggest upset in Robert Morris University athletics history, upending second-ranked Notre Dame, 4-2, on the road Sunday afternoon. The Colonials rallied from a 2-0 deficit to post their first victory over a ranked squad and improve to 7-10-1 on the season. Notre Dame falls to 17-4-1 while watching a seven-game win streak come to a close.

“This is the biggest win in program history,” said Robert Morris head coach Derek Schooley. “To be able to go into the number-two team in the nation’s building – where they are undefeated – and knock them off is very exciting for our program. I’m very proud and excited for our players. I couldn’t be happier about the way our guys competed. I’m very proud of our team right now.”

The only other win that a Colonial team has posted over a ranked opponent in recent history came this past fall when the football team beat Central Connecticut State in overtime, 23-17. The Blue Devils came into that game ranked 19th in I-AA by The Sports Network.

Senior goaltender Joe Tuset (Eagan, Minn. / Western Michigan University), making just his fourth start of the season and seventh of his career, posted 34 saves in the victory to improve to 2-2 this season. He stopped 25 shots in the first two periods, shutting out the Irish over the game’s final 32:39, as the Colonials allowed just two goals on 11 Irish power play chances.

Notre Dame scored the game’s first two goals via the power power play and looked to be in control. Garret Regan tallied his eight of the season with 50 seconds left in the first period and Ryan Thang made it 2-0 at 7:21 of the second period.

Junior defenseman Jeff Gilbert (Barrie, Ontario / Aurora Tigers) put Robert Morris on the board just 2:41 after Thang’s goal, scoring his fourth of the season on an assist by junior forward Joel Gasper (Crookston, Minn. / Billings Bulls). The 2-1 scored stood for the remainder of the period as the Colonials faced five Irish power plays, killing off all but the Thang goal.

The third period belonged Robert Morris as they scored twice on three power play chances and killed off three more Notre Dame chances in the final stanza.

Junior David Boguslawski (Cottage Grove, Minn. / Tri-City Storm) scored a goal for the third straight game, a power play marker, at 5:54 of the period. His eighth goal of the season was assisted by sophomore Jason Towsley (Lasalle, Ontario / Leamington Flyers) and junior defenseman Andrew Bonello (Brampton, Ontario / Milton Icehawks).

Towsley then put RMU up, 3-2, cashing in on Bonello’s second helper of the night at 10:10, for his fifth score of the year. Senior forward Doug Conley (East Amherst, N.Y. / Tri-City Storm) iced the game at 16:20 with the second Robert Morris power play goal of the game. Boguslawski and junior forward Jake Sparks (Evergreen, Colo. / Central Texas Blackhawks) up the assists.

The Colonials held the Irish to just 2-11 on the power play while cashing in on two of three chances.

Robert Morris returns to College Hockey America play Friday, January 12, as they travel to Alabama-Huntsville for a 7:05 p.m. start.
