Robert Morris Sets 2006 Schedule

For just the second time in school history, the Robert Morris University football team will play an 11-game regular-season schedule in 2006. The Colonials, under the direction of head coach Joe Walton, also played an 11-game slate in 2004. Highlighting the 2006 schedule is five home games at Joe Walton Stadium, the program’s first on-campus football stadium that enters its second season in the fall.

For the second straight year Robert Morris will open its season on the road, traveling to Dayton, Ohio, for a 1:00 p.m. match-up with perennial Pioneer Football League (PFL) power the University of Dayton Saturday, Sept. 2. A week later the Colonials will open their 2006 home schedule by hosting perennial Metro-Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) power and crosstown rival Duquesne Saturday, Sept. 9. In RMU’s 12 seasons since the program began in 1994, the Colonials have posted a record of 8-4 in season openers. In home openers, Robert Morris boasts an all-time record of 11-1.

Rounding out the non-conference slate for the Colonials is a Sept. 16 road game at Butler before a home tilt with Division III Rowan Sept. 23. Robert Morris opens Northeast Conference play with a 1:00 p.m. game at in-state rival St. Francis Saturday, Sept. 30, and will also visit Wagner for a conference tilt Saturday, Oct. 7, before returning home to host two-time defending NEC co-champion Central Connecticut State at Joe Walton Stadium Saturday, Oct. 14. The game against the Blue Devils marks Homecoming festivities at the University.

RMU’s 2006 football schedule also includes home conference games with Monmouth (Oct. 21) and Albany (Nov. 4), while the Colonials will take to the road for conference games at 2005 NEC co-champion Stony Brook (Oct. 28) and Sacred Heart (Nov. 11).

Under the tutelage Walton, the only head coach in Robert Morris history, the Colonials own an all-time record of 75-45-1 (.624 winning percentage). During that span Robert Morris has claimed five Northeast Conference titles (1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000), a pair of I-AA mid-major national championships (1999, 2000) according to Don Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette and two ECAC Classic victories (1996, 1997).
