Wright’s Hat Trick Leads Colonials Over Bentley, 5-2

Senior Kurt Wright (Barnstable, Mass. / Univ. of Findlay) recorded his first career hat trick and added an assist to lead the Robert Morris University men’s hockey team to a 5-2 win at Bentley on Saturday afternoon. All five Colonial goals came via the power play and propelled the team to 2-2-0 on the season, matching Bentley’s 2-2-0 mark.

Robert Morris went 5-8 on the power to improve their conversion percentage to 36.4 on the year, putting them tops in the nation. It also tied the College Hockey America record for power play goals in a game, a feat that has been achieved five times.

Wright scored the opener 12:51 into the contest with a shot from the right point that fooled Bentley junior goaltender Ray Jean. Wright netted his second of the game with just five seconds to go in the first half to give the Colonials a 2-0 lead at the end of one period.

In the second period, Wright set up the next goal as he picked up an assist 3:33 into the second period. He fed sophomore Brett Hopfe (Didsbury, Alberta / Olds Grizzlys), who shot past Jean for his fourth tally of the season.

Bentley hit right back to cut the lead to 3-1 just 1:54 later as junior Marc Zwicky jammed home a rebound at 5:27 for his second goal of the season. Three minutes later Wright netted his third goal of the night and fourth goal of the weekend to restore the three goal cushion for Robert Morris. The Falcons responded as senior Ryan Lessnau scored his second goal of the weekend to cut the lead to 4-2.

Robert Morris took away any momentum Bentley had five minutes into the third period as freshman Chris Margott (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Bay State Breakers) scored the Colonial’s fifth power play goal of the game to restore the three goal lead.

From there, sophomore Christian Boucher (Orleans, Ontario / Cumberland Grads) nailed down the win. He finished the game with 33 saves, including 21 in the second period, while Jean made 15 and Kearney made 13 stops in relief for Bentley.

Junior Doug Conley (Amherst, N.Y. / Tri-City Storm) finished with three assists while sophomore Jake Sparks (Evergreen, Colo. / Central Texas Blackhawks) added two assists.

The Colonials return home next weekend to take on Quinnipiac in a two-game series at the RMU Island Sports Center Friday and Saturday, October 28 and 29. Both games start at 7:35 p.m.
