Colonials Ink Kyle Frieday To National Letter of Intent

The Robert Morris University men’s ice hockey team signed its first player of the 2005-06 recruiting season today when forward Kyle Frieday (Burlington, Ontario / Oakville Blades) signed a National Letter of Intent.

“Kyle Frieday is a dynamic skater who will fit well into our hockey system,” said Robert Morris head coach Derek Schooley. “He has excellent puck skills and shoots the puck extremely well. He has championship experience from playing on a 2004-05 Georgetown Raiders team that won the Ontario Provincial Junior A League Playoff Championship and played in the Royal Bank Cup, Canada's Junior A National Championship.”

Frieday is currently a member of the Oakville Blades of the Ontario Provincial Junior A League (OHA) where he is tied for second on the team with 17 points in 20 games. He has seven goals, including two power play and two shorthanded, to go along with 10 assists.

Prior to this season, Frieday spent each of the last two years in the OHA with the Georgetown Raiders. In 2004-05, he helped the Raiders to an OHA playoff championship and a berth in the Canadian Junior A National Championships. That season, he finished with 22 goals and 20 assists for 42 points in 46 games. Georgetown finished the year with a 41-7-0-1 record.

In 2003-04, Georgetown was the regular-season champion, posting another impressive record of 40-5-3-1. Frieday chipped in with 13 goals and four assists, totaling 17 points in 45 games.

“I believe we're off to a good start in our recruiting efforts this season with this signing,” said Schooley. “This season’s recruiting class won't be large in numbers as only senior Kurt Wright will graduate from our team this season. However, I believe Kyle and our future recruits will be capable of making a significant contribution during their careers.”

Robert Morris is 2-4-0 in its second season of NCAA Division I ice hockey. The Colonials play host to the newest team in D-I this weekend when Rochester Institute of Technology visits the RMU Island Sports Center on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 12-13. Saturday’s game is slated to start at 7:35 p.m. followed by a 5:35 p.m. start on Sunday.
