Men's Hockey Sets Goal Record In 7-7 Tie With Wayne State

The Robert Morris University men’s hockey team set a new record for goals in a game as they tied Wayne State, 7-7, on Friday night at the RMU Island Sports Center. The Warriors scored with one-tenth of a second left in the third period to send the game into overtime. Colonials freshman Chris Margott (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Bay State Breakers) scored a goal and had two assists to set a Robert Morris freshman scoring record with 19 points on the year.

The Colonials remain one-point ahead of Wayne State in the CHA standings at 4-7-2 in conference play and 8-15-3 overall. The Warriors are 2-6-5 in the CHA and 5-16-6 overall.

Margott is tied with senior Kurt Wright (Barnstable, Mass. / Univ. of Findlay) for the team lead in points, 19, which is also a single season record. Wright had a goal and an assist as six Colonials finished with multi-point games. Wayne State’s Adam Krug led all scorers with five points on a goal and five assists, having a hand in all but two of his team’s seven goals. Four Warrior players finished with multi-point games.

Robert Morris jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period with Wright and sophomores Joel Gasper (Crookston, Minn. / Billings Bulls) and Andrew Bonello (Brampton, Ontario / Milton Icehawks) scoring the goals.

The second period featured a combined seven goals, four power play and one shorthanded. Wayne State scored the first two of the period by Derek Bachynski and A. Krug. Bachynski’s was a power play goal while Krug scored shorthanded at 9:02.

Just nine seconds after Krug’s goal, Margott made it 4-2 with a power goal. Sophomore Brett Hopfe (Didsbury, Alberta / Olds Grizzlys) stretched it out to 5-2 with the team’s second power goal of the period at 11:04.

Wayne State countered 1:51 later as Jason Baclig recorded his fifth of the year, but only 32 seconds later Robert Morris freshman Jason Towsley (Lasalle, Ontario / Leamington Flyers) put the lead at 6-3 with 6:33 left in the second frame.

The Warriors would score once more in the period on a power play goal by Mark Nebus, sending the game into the second intermission with the Colonials leading, 6-4, after Nebus’ goal at 15:44.

Stavros Paskaris cut the margin to 6-5, 9:02 into the third period and just 35 seconds later, Dan Iliakis tied the game on his second goal of the year, a slap shot from the left point.

The Colonials regained the lead with 6:37 left in regulation when sophomore Logan Bittle (Peoria, Ill. / Soo Indians) scored on a rebound, giving RMU a 7-6 edge and their third power-play marker of the night.

However, with an extra-attacker on the ice, Wayne State sent the game into overtime when Jason Bloomingburg somehow found the puck in a frenzy in front of the net. His rebound goal with 0:00.1 showing on the clock knotted the game at its final score of 7-7.

Robert Morris sophomore goaltender Christian Boucher (Orleans, Ontario /Cumberland Grads) finished with 30 saves on 37 shots. Will Hooper earned the tie for Wayne State, making 13 saves and allowing just one goal while playing 30:23. Matt Kelly started for the Warriors, allowing six goals and stopping 15 shots before being pulled after 33:27 in net.

Both teams had six power-play chances with the Colonials capitalizing on three and the Warriors twice. Wayne State held a 37-35 advantage in shots.

These two teams meet again on Saturday, February 11, at 7:35 p.m. at the RMU Island Sports Center.
