Men’s Hockey Falls In CHA Championship In Overtime

The Robert Morris University men’s hockey team jumped out to a 4-0 first period lead, but watched Alabama-Huntsville erase that margin and win 12:31 into overtime of the College Hockey America Championship game Sunday afternoon at 95KGGO Arena in Des Moines, Iowa.

David Nimmo scored the gamewinner, shorthanded, after winning a puck on the left boards in his own zone. He rushed down ice one-on-one against RMU junior goaltender Christian Boucher (Orleans, Ontario / Cumberland Grads). Boucher got his glove on Nimmo’s shot, but the puck trickled across the line an instant before Nimmo crashed into the net for the gamewinner.

The Robert Morris special teams continued to roll in the first period Sunday, just as it had Saturday night. After going 4-8 in their 7-5 semifinal win over Bemidji State, the Colonials went 3-6 on the man advantage in the first period against Huntsville (13-19-3).

Junior forward Ryan Cruthers (Farmingdale, N.Y. / Army) opened the scoring when he one-timed a cross-ice feed from junior Sean Berkstresser (Apollo, Pa. / Pittsburgh Forge) at 6:36. Freshman defenseman Dave Cowan (Calgary, Alberta / Olds Grizzlys) scored his first career goal at 9:02, ripping a slapshot from the between the circles high over the stickside of Marc Narduzzi with help from junior forward Logan Bittle (Peoria, Ill. / Soo Indians) and Cruthers. Berkstresser made is 3-0 with the team’s only even-strength marker of the period at 12:09, tipping in a shot by senior Doug Conley (East Amherst, N.Y. / Tri-City Storm). The goal chased Narduzzi from net in favor Blake MacNicol.

The first period onslaught continued, however, as sophomore forward Chris Margott (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Bay State Breakers) capped the scoring for RMU with a power play goal at 16:43. Cruthers earned his third point of the period and senior Aaron Clarke (Peterborough, Ontario / Niagara University) collected an assist as well.

Huntsville climbed back into the contest early in the second period with a set of power play goals and an even-strength score. Kevin Morrison buried a rebound after a shot by Scott Kalinchuk 1:18 into the new frame. David Nimmo added a 5-on-3 power play score just 1:40 later to cut the margin to 4-2. Nimmo collected a pass in the slot, spun and beat Boucher low on the stick side. Grant Selinger made it a one-goal game with 21 seconds left in the third period when he tipped in a pass from Josh Murray.

The Chargers knotted the game 5:22 into the third period with their third power play goal of the contest. Kalinchuk beat Boucher high on the glove side with a slap shot from the top of the right circle. Brett McConnachie and Shaun Arvai earned the assists.

Robert Morris finished 3-13 on the power play and were 7-21 with the man-advantage during the tournament. Huntsville also had three power play markers on six chances. Boucher finished with 45 saves while MacNicol tallied 28 in a back-up and gave up just one goal. Huntsville held a 50-33 advantage in shots.

The CHA All-Tournament Team was made up of Berkstresser, Margott and Dave Cowan. Huntsville had four players on the squad – goalie MacNicol, Kevin Morrison, Mike Salekin and tournament MVP Nimmo.

With the loss, Robert Morris finishes the season with a team record 14 wins to go along with 18 losses and two ties. The Colonials lose five players to graduation – forwards Aaron Clarke, Doug Conley, and Joey Olson (Peoria, Ill. / Capital Centre Pride), defenseman Bryan Mills (Oakville, Ontario / Niagara University) and goaltender Joe Tuset (Eagan, Minn. / Northern Michigan University)– while potentially returning 24 players.
