The course is a first course in the study of environment science. The course is a study of interrelationships that equips students with the necessary information to understand the complex arena of environmental concerns, problems, and alternative courses of action. Questions of human populations and their interaction with the environment, as well as basic ecological principles, environmental ethics, resource use, and conservation are addressed. This course concludes with alternatives we might use to build a society capable of living on Earth with less harmful impacts. Principles of scientific inquiry are integrated throughout the course. |

A distinguished engineering educator, Dr Omurtag is currently a Professor of Engineering and Science and was the Founding Dean of the School of Engineering, Mathematics and Science from 1999 to 2005 at RMU. Dr Omurtag along with the team of faculty members he hired, established the School of Engineering, Mathematics and Science and obtained ABET accreditation for the BS degree programs in Engineering in record time. He also led the efforts to establish the MS program in Engineering Management and an innovative non-residential PhD program in Engineering. A Research Center CARES to conduct applied research in engineering and sciences was also established to provide outreach service to area industry. In addition to engineering programs he also lead the establishment of Environmental Science programs including a Pre-Medicine option and the Actuarial Science BS Degree program inside the Mathematics Department. Engineering and Science Labs were established during his tenure as dean, based on the concept of Learning Factory in Engineering Education similar to the teaching hospitals in the study of Medicine. Prior to RMU he was at the University of Missouri-Rolla where he served as a Department Head and a Professor of Engineering Management in their School of Engineering. During his tenure as Head, the Department of Engineering Management achieved rankings among the top tier schools of Industrial Engineering and Management, and Manufacturing Engineering. Through out his service at Rolla, he directed and mentored as many as 55 PhDs some of whom are now serving as faculty, department heads and deans at universities throughout the world. A registered Professional Engineer Dr Omurtag holds a Mechanical Engineering Bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University, a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Middle East Technical University in Turkey and a PhD in Industrial Engineering from Iowa State. In addition to Robert Morris University and UM-Rolla he has served as faculty at Wichita State University, University of Tennessee Space Institute, Istanbul Technical University, California State University School of Business, Iowa State University and the Middle East Technical University where he was the co-founder of the first Industrial Engineering department in Turkey. A Fellow in the American Society for Engineering Management, Dr Omurtag has received the Sarchet Award from American Society for Engineering Education for distinguishing professional service. He has also received three service medals from the US Army Aviation Troop Command and the Association of US Army Engineer School for distinguished service to the US Army.
