SPMG3360-A International Sport Management (Spring 2015)

Course Details

The main feature of this course is a trip to Greece, the birthplace of Western civilization and the Olympics. Students will visit the archaeological sites of the Acropolis, Delphi, Epidaurus, and Ancient Olympia. Stops will also include Kallimarmaro Stadium, which hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, and the Olympic Athletic Center of Athens 'Spiros Louis' at which the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 2004 Summer Olympics were held. While in Greece students will have the opportunity to interact with executives from local sport properties such as Super League Greece, Olympiacos FC, and the Athens Marathon. The study abroad component of the course will take place from May 10 to May 24, 2015.

Course Description

International Sport Management introduces students to core segments of a global sport industry and highlights opportunities and challenges of globalization in sport. Emphasis is placed on the efforts of North American sport properties to grow their business overseas along with aspects of governance and culture of the Olympic Movement and other major international sport organizations/events. This course covers international sport business strategies including sport marketing, sponsorship, media, event, and tourism management.

Prerequisites: SOCI1010 and 30 credits
