Course Description

This course focuses upon adolescence through senescence in regard to health promotion, wellness maintenance, disease prevention, early detection of problems, prompt treatment of acute illness, and support for management and self-care during chronic conditions. The role of gender in health care politics locally and globally and concern for special populations such as the lesbian and transgendered and disabled women are explored. The use of hypothesis driven inquiry with opportunities to develop problem solving abilities is promoted. Developmental characteristics of adolescence, young adulthood and middle adulthood and old age and issues related to pharmacologic therapies and alternative and complimentary medicine are discussed. Women as care provider and patient and the partnership between care providers and women are explored. Healthy People 2010 recommendations are considered in relationship to eliminating health care disparities. Students access evidence for best practices, evaluate the sources of this evidence and tailor recommendations to women's health practice.
