This interdisciplinary course provides an introduction to the topic of men and masculinities. Specifically, we will explore how masculinities are managed, performed, and policed primarily from a U.S. perspective. In this course, the specter of masculinities will be seen as being articulated from various ideological and structural programs, including but not limited to patriarchy, violence, capitalism, schooling, and mass media among others. The impact of masculinities will vary depending on the intersectional aspect of one's identities (ex. race, class, gender, inter alia). First, to facilitate this reading of men and masculinities, course readings will anchor discussions and projects throughout the semester. Second, discussions inside and outside the classroom will serve as a bridge between the concepts investigated in the texts and the lived realities of the students. Third, assignments will provide students an opportunity to delve deeper into various masculinities and reflect on their own meaning making of the course.
