Section will be taught totally online with no scheduled class meetings. Students must arrange for daily access to a computer and the Internet prior to the start of classes. Robert Morris labs are to be used only as a backup in special situations and may not be relied upon for extended periods of time. In addition to the Internet link, online classes have a large emphasis on email. Course Description

This course provides the student with an opportunity to examine the value of information systems technology to support the development of evidence based practice guidelines and/ or policy. Units of content will explore methods for critically appraising and synthesizing evidence and choosing systems to facilitate information literacy for evidence-based practice, quality improvement and outcomes evaluation. Standards and principles for selecting and evaluating information systems will be discussed, along with ethical and legal issues. Use of outcomes data to shape health care policy; measurement of cost-effectiveness; and the development of new practice guidelines based on outcomes research will be emphasized. The student will gain practice in using information systems in order to make decisions, and will participate in developing a project in his/her own work setting.
