Course Description

This course connects practices common in literary analysis (analyzing point of view, authorial reliability, plot, theme, symbol, characterization etc.) with skills relevant to the health sciences (such as verbal reasoning, critical thinking, pursuing implications, clarifying ambiguity, making inferences etc.). Studens apply literary analysis to novels, short stories, plays and/or poetry in order to understand concepts related to the health sciences, such as health, wellness, death, dying, disability, autonomy, professionalism and others. The course's interdisciplinary approach emphasizes the importance of narrative in health care and is designed for students without prior coursework in literature. The course is open to al students.

Prerequisite: COSK1221 or COSK1225
