Course Description

In this course, students will learn about the leadership of nonprofit organizations focusing specifically on the executive leader and board's role in leading the organization. This includes the leadership of the board itself, as well as the leadership of staff and volunteers. The course reviews the role of the board, nonprofit governance and bylaws, and executive leaders' accountability, ethics, skills, and traits. The class will examine key stategic leadership actions, including creating a shared vision and strategic planning with a focus on application in practical nonprofit leadership situations. Various aspects of volunteer leadership, such as recruitent, development, and engagement are explored. Students will review approaches to planning for staff, leadership, and board succession. Throughout the course, case studies and applications are incorporated, providing students with a practical introduction to nonprofit leadership.
