Course Description

Advanced COBOL Programming provides the student with experience in the development and maintenance of COBOL programs as a part of overall information systems, using the "Program Development Process Model". The programming concepts handled through discussion, examples, and program assignments include: control-break processing, data validation, multiple file handling, table processing, internal COBOL sorting, batch sequential file processing, and sequential file updating. Additional concepts covered through lecture and discussion include batch indexed sequential file processing and updating, the use of sub-programs, structured program design considerations, the interrelationship of programs within an information system, coding for program efficiency and clarity, and the creation and use of quality program documentation.
