Student Journalist of the Year

Thursday, October 9, 2014

buzzelliRobert Morris University senior Nick Buzzelli has won the Art Barlow Student Journalist of the Year Award from the Society for Collegiate Journalists.

Buzzelli, a journalism major and Honors student, was attracted to RMU because of its NCAA Division I athletics program. As a young child he attended basketball games and hockey games with his uncle, who attended RMU in the 1990s. But his most memorable experience came when he was in high school attending a basketball game at the Sewall Center Arena.

“I was a sophomore in high school and I was at the 2009 NEC championship game,” which RMU won on a shot with four seconds left over Mount St. Mary’s. “After seeing that and being in that atmosphere I knew I wanted to come here.”

Coming out of high school Buzzelli knew he wanted to be a journalist.

“I thought this was the best place to come because they had D-1 sports but it’s a small enough school where I would be able to cover them as a freshman.”

Upon graduation from RMU, Buzzelli looks to enter into a journalism masters program at Kent State University. He wants to work for a newspaper covering sports, and he is currently doing freelance work for WPXI-TV.
