Since its inception, the School of Engineering, Mathematics and Science has been involved in outreach activities to middle and high school students and educators. On its own and in collaboration with the Partnership for Regional Innovation in Manufacturing Education (PRIME) coalition, RMU has reached over 1,000 students through camps workshops and other events.
We believe students get excited about careers in engineering, mathematics and science through interaction and hands-on demonstrations. With that in mind, the school continues to host Saturday workshops on an ongoing basis during the fall and spring for middle and high school students. The workshops involve all three disciplines. Some of the topics include Robotics with Lego Mindstorms, Modern Lab Instrumentation, Computer Aided Engineering for Future Engineers and a math competition.
In addition to student outreach activities, another event we offer is a series of math and science educator receptions that allow us to showcase our newly renovated facilities and labs. Teachers, principals, and guidance counselors are welcomed to our receptions by our dean of enrollment and dean of the school. They are given overviews of all our programs by each department head and offered tours of our Learning Factory and brand new science labs. We try to hold about two receptions each semester in order to accomodate educators' schedules.
The school also offers tours of all our labs to middle and high school students and teachers by appointment, and we work with schools to provide faculty presentations and demonstrations in the classroom when requested.
