This applied mathematics program includes a concentration in teacher education that prepares graduates to teach mathematics in grades 7 through 12. Graduates who successfully complete all requirements and meet professional criteria are eligible to apply for an Instructional I teaching certificate from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In order to obtain this certificate, students must meet minimum competency requirements on the Professional Assessments for Beginning Teachers (Praxis) exams.

The program offers students several advantages:

• Content Knowledge. More than 90 percent of the program's graduates have passed the rigorous mathematics content knowledge exam required for teacher certification in Pennsylvania.
• Faculty. Faculty members are active in professional associations and current areas of research, reform and improvement. They enjoy collaborative relationships with area school districts to ensure excellent placement for student teachers and graduates.
• Technology. A major emphasis of the program is the integration of technology into the mathematics classroom. The program includes all of the tools necessary for mathematics educators to integrate technology to enhance learning.
• Teaching Skills. Pedagogical knowledge and skills are developed through coursework and extensive field experiences in local school districts. As early as the freshman year, students engage in work that relates directly to the classroom experience.
• Job Placement. More than 90 percent of the program's graduates have found full-time employment as a secondary mathematics teachers. Area school districts employing graduates include West Allegheny, Mt. Lebanon, Moon, Fox Chapel and North Allegheny.

Curriculum Requirements

The B.S. in applied mathematics program requires 126 credit hours. It has four components:

• Robert Morris University Core - 40 credits
  These are the traditional liberal arts learning requirements of the University. Studies in humanities and social, behavioral, natural and quantitative sciences are included.
• Applied Mathematics - 41 credits
  This component includes studies in applied calculus and analytic geometry, statistics, linear algebra, abstract algebra, non-Euclidian geometry, discrete mathematics and computer programming.
• Education - 30 credits
  This component of concentration courses includes studies in educational psychology, foundations of education, learning processes, instructional strategies and supervised teaching.
• Open Electives - 15 credits
  This component permits students to select courses from other University programs to personalize the program of study.
