Fall 2010 The following are the criteria for the B. Kenneth Simon Free Enterprise Scholarship. Applicants must:
- Be enrolled as a high school senior.
- Be a resident for more than one (1) year of one of the following Pennsylvania counties: Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Washington or Westmoreland.
- Possess a cumulative high school grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
- Possess a combined SAT score of 1100 (critical reading and math) or higher or an ACT composite score of 24 or better.
- Secure a sponsoring teacher from high school to serve as an advisor for the research paper.
- Submit a research paper of between 2,500 and 3,000 words on a topic established annually by the scholarship selection committee.
- Students must attend a mandatory orientation session on Thursday, March 18, 2010, to gain direction on completing the required essay and to meet with members of the B. Kenneth Simon Free Enterprise Scholarship Selection Committee.
Topic For Research Paper For Fall 2010 Candidates The U.S. Constitution requires the federal government to “guarantee to every state in this union a republican form of government” (Article IV, Section 4). Discuss the meaning of the term “republican form of government” and the different forms of government that are possible. Discuss why the Framers included this provision in the Constitution. Was this a necessary or proper provision to include?
The paper should be between 2,500 and 3,000 words and must include footnotes, references to sources and a bibliography page.
Scholarship Timeline The following is the timeline in the selection process for the B. Kenneth Simon Free Enterprise Scholarship.
Friday, February 26, 2010 Application deadline for all students interested in the scholarship.
Thursday, March 18, 2010 Applicants must attend this mandatory information session providing details on the scholarship and the selection process.
Friday, April 16, 2010 Research papers due for all candidates.
Friday, May 14, 2010 (approximately) B. Kenneth Simon Free Enterprise Scholarship Fall 2010 recipient chosen and notified.
Mandatory Orientation Session Applicants must attend a mandatory orientation session at Robert Morris University on Thursday, March 18, 2010. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend. The orientation session will include the following:
- An overview of Robert Morris University
- An overview of the selection criteria and process for the scholarship
- An overview of the grading criteria for the research paper
- A suggested list of sources to review in preparation for the research paper
