Saturday, February 23 from 9 a.m. - 12:00 noon at the Sheraton Station Square
We hope you will join Girls Coalition of SWPA as we welcome recent TEDxWomen speakers, Julia Bluhm and Izzy Labbe, to Pittsburgh. Julia and Izzy, both 14, are teenage feminist-activists at Hardy Girls Healthy Women and bloggers for the SPARK Movement - a girl-fueled activist movement to demand an end to the sexualization of women and girls in the media. Together, they wrote a successful petition asking Seventeen Magazine to use more authentic images and to stop retouching photos to make girls and young women look sexier and less flawed.
The event also includes:
-
Successful girl-led activism from southwestern PA - featuring girls who are taking steps to challenge the injustices they see, using their voices to elevate the conversation around important issues, and otherwise changing the world right here in our own neighborhoods.
-
Laila Al-Soulaiman draws attention to violence in Syria.
-
Charlotte Murphy preserves a basketball program for girls in the Pittsburgh Public Schools, seeking Title IX suuport from Women's Law Project.
-
-
The opportunity to ask questions of the presenters
-
A chance to engage with local agencies and organizations who are providing opportunities for girls to successfully lead, or be a part of efforts to challenge conventions, eliminate barriers and change the things they don't like about the world they live in.
This event is a great opportunity for girls to hear first-hand accounts of girl-led activism happening in our region and beyond. Register online now! Cost is $8, though group rates are available for eight or more - contact Heather for more information.
SPARK Movement was founded by our partner Hardy Girls Healthy Women, along with Women's Media Center, ISIS, Inc. and The ASAP Initiative at Hunter College. Both Julia and Izzy are members of Hardy Girls Healthy Women's Girls Advisory Board.
