Summer Technology Classes at The Bayer Center

For some reason, summer classes have a laid-back feel to them.  Dress is more casual, work schedules don’t seem as hectic, and our minds seem better prepared to absorb additional knowledge.

We like teaching “tech camp” classes as much as you like taking them.  So…once again this summer, we’ve put together a number of classes for your technology learning pleasure!

To register for any of the convenings, classes, or clinics below, call 412-397-6000, email bcnm@rmu.edu, or visit http://www.rmu.edu/bcnmregistration.

Classes:

Writing for the Web
Tuesday, July 20 from 9 a.m. – noon
Fee:  $65
Instructor:  Cindy Leonard, Bayer Center

Writing content for your website is very different from other types of written communications, in large part due to the way people read it. Most of your written materials must be altered for use on a web page in order to make them readable and usable. In this class, learn how to improve your written website content, increase your site’s usability, and leverage your website as a communication tool.

Learning the Language of Website Accessibility
Tuesday, July 27 from 9 a.m.– noon
Fee:  $65 or $115 for the whole day
Instructor: Tiffany Kuchta, Allegheny Graphics Web Development, LLC

How do you make sure your website is accessible to people with disabilities? Locate the resources you’ll need to develop an accessible website in-house, or learn the appropriate acronyms and buzzwords to effectively communicate your website’s accessibility goals to your developer. Nonprofit marketing and web design staff as well as beginning website developers are welcome.

Learning the Language of Website Accessibility…Literally
Tuesday, July 27 from 1 – 4 p.m.
Fee:  $65 or $115 for the whole day
Instructor: Tiffany Kuchta, Allegheny Graphics Web Development, LLC

This class focuses on the underlying theories of website accessibility and their practical implementation, including an in-depth review of the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines and hands-on instruction. Learn how to use XHTML, CSS and Adobe Dreamweaver to create an accessible website. Nonprofit marketing and web design staff as well as beginning/intermediate website developers welcome.  The morning session, “Learning the Language of Website Accessibility,” is a prerequisite for this course.

Effective Presentations
Tuesday, August 24 from 9 a.m.–noon
Fee:  $65 or $115 for the whole day
Instructor: Jeff Forster, Bayer Center

There are few things worse than losing your audience. A narrative that lacks a human touch or a lack of audience interaction can contribute to wandering attention. In this workshop, we’ll focus on planning and executing a presentation to maximize your audience’s level of knowledge and interest in your topic. We’ll discuss that optimal blend of facts and stories that make the experience memorable. Whether public speaking tops your list of fears or you want to take your presentation skills to the next level, this workshop will enhance your ability to present information in a way that engages your audience and moves them to action.

Presentation Visuals that Work
Tuesday, August 24 from 1–4 p.m.
Fee:  $65 or $115 for the whole day
Instructor: Jeff Forster, Bayer Center

Bullets are not only dangerous in guns. Although your presence and preparation make a huge impact on the success of a presentation’s ability to inform and persuade, bad visuals can undermine your message. In fact, PowerPoint itself may have taught us bad habits.
This class will help you create visuals that will make your facts, stories, and ideas stick with your audience.

Outlook Camp 2007
Thursday, August 26 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Fee:  $125
Instructor:  Cindy Leonard, Bayer Center
