In order to protect you from getting hundreds of spam messages (and to help reduce virus threats), all incoming e-mail is verified by a Spam Filter. This filter has two main functions: removing extraneous e-mails from the system and removing harmful attachments from e-mails. E-mails considered spam by the Filter are delivered to a personal "quarantine" instead of being delivered to your e-mail box.
How does it work?
All incoming e-mail from the outside is filtered as soon as it arrives. Messages that contain a virus, or spam, or inappropriate content get a "score," and if the score is high enough, the message is sent to a Quarantine. If spam messages addressed to you end up in the Quarantine, you will receive a notification, called a Digest, in your e-mail box.
What is a Digest?
The Spam Filter e-mails a list of quarantined messages, called a Digest, to you three times a day. This e-mail will provide you with a list of the messages that are stored in your Quarantine, so you can look at the subject headers. You will only receive these e-mails if any new messages have been added to your quarantine. Additionally, the Spam Filter e-mails a summary digest of all the e-mail messages in your personal quarantine once a week.
Releasing Messages From Quarantine
Sometimes the Spam Filter designates a message as spam when it may be an e-mail that you actually want to receive. If you decide you want to read the message, you can release it, so it moves out of the Quarantine and is delivered to your e-mail box. To release a message, click the "Release" link next to the message in your Digest.
What happens to my messages in the Quarantine?
If you do not Release a message from the Quarantine, it will automatically be deleted after 10 days.
E-mail Attachments
E-mails that contain attached files that could contain viruses are automatically stripped of the potentially dangerous file. The e-mail is still delivered to your Mailbox (as long as it isn't spam). If an attached file is removed from an e-mail message, a note is included in the message indicating the removal. Please contact the sender to have the file sent in an allowable format.
