Accidental Techie Spotlight - March 2009

Meet Margie Wolfe and Millie Zier of Victim Outreach Intervention Center (VOICe)!

Margie Wolfe and Millie ZierTNotes:  What are your “real” job titles?
MW & MZ:
Margie is the Executive Assistant and Millie is the Administrative Assistant for Victim Outreach Intervention Center.  We are also sisters!

TNotes:  Why are you considered accidental techies?
MW & MZ:  We haven’t had any specific training or schooling for technology, we have learned as we go through trial and error, and if you at first don’t succeed, try, try, try, try again.  We love working with computers.  As sisters, [we think that] computers and technology are intriguing and a challenge that we gladly accept at VOICe.  The best is when a co-worker is having a problem with their computer and either of us will go to their office to take a look, and then without even doing a thing (other than standing behind them) the problem will be fixed…there are no words to explain it!

TNotes:  What do you like best about dealing with your organization’s technology?
MW & MZ:  The new and exciting technology that every day brings.

TNotes:  What do you least like about dealing with your organization’s technology?
MW & MZ:  The new and exciting technology that every day brings.

TNotes:  What is your big dream for technology in your organization?
MW & MZ:
A unified, up-to-date system that allows for everyone to understand and to be able to use.  Life and work can be so much easier when you use a tool for the job.  As our dad would say, to do a job right, you need the right tool.

TNotes:  How do you manage your roles as accidental techies?
MW & MZ:  We rely on the knowledge of others, the Internet or techie books.  It is reflective in the work we do here at VOICe.  Not one of us has all the answers, but as a collective, we are knowledgeable and strong.

TNotes:  Any words of advice or encouragement for other accidental techies out there?
MW & MZ:  Technology can be overwhelming.  Take comfort in the fact that you may not know all the answers.  Take time to research and utilize the knowledge of others.  Oh yeah…when frustration sets in, don’t forget to breathe!
