Meet Chris Chambers of the Frick Art & Historical Center!

TNotes:  What is your “real” job title? 
CC:  I am the Controller here at the Frick

TNotes:  Why are you considered an accidental techie? 
CC:  When I came to the Frick in 1997, we did not have a computer network, just stand-alone computers on desks. The task of networking the site, choosing and maintaining hardware and software, training staff, etc., fell to the Finance Department.

TNotes:  What do you like best about dealing with your organization’s technology?
CC:  I’ve always been interested in technology; I like learning about new technology.

TNotes:  What do you least like about dealing with your organization’s technology?
CC:  Difficult to manage, stay on top of things. Lots and lots of details!

TNotes:  What is your big dream for technology in your organization?
CC:  Error-free software and PCs (unrealistic.) Seamless integration between our software systems (somewhat realistic.)

TNotes:  How do you manage your role as an accidental techie?
CC:  I have help. I manage to steal some time from our HR Coordinator (I’ve created another accidental techie!) and we use an IT firm for hardware purchases and maintenance.

TNotes:  You are a regular attendee at one of the Bayer Center’s Bagels & Bytes group – what do you get from going to those meetings?
CC:  Lots of tech tips and, most important, support from peers. Sometimes it’s good to know that others are having the same problems you are. In a number of sessions, the group has suggested approaches and solutions to one member’s specific problem.

TNotes:  Any words of advice or encouragement for other accidental techies out there?
CC:  Don’t give up! Especially in these times, we’re all being asked to accomplish more with less. Use the resources that are available to you. Read articles, attend meetings and conferences to keep yourself current with technology, and network with your peers.
