Moon Township, Pa., July 31, 2008 – Robert Morris University (RMU) will offer a bachelor of science degree in biology through the University’s School of Engineering, Mathematics and Science beginning in the fall of 2009.
The new biology degree is further evidence of RMU’s phenomenal growth over the past 10 years, particularly since achieving university status in 2002. Since that time, the University has added approximately 20 degree programs.
"Consistent with RMU's mission, the major in biology combines a solid grounding in theory, an emphasis on critical thinking and communication skills, and a high level of technical competence that will lead to rewarding careers in the life sciences for our graduates,” said David Jamison, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at RMU.
“Moreover, the range of courses in the biology major will enhance our already strong programs in environmental science and pre-medicine. It's the logical next step in the development of the sciences at RMU," said Jamison.
The biology major will provide another option for students in RMU’s Pre-Medicine Program, which was launched in 2005 by the School of Engineering, Mathematics and Science. Students in the pre-med program may also choose to major in environmental science, which is offered as a bachelor of arts and a bachelor of science. The school also offers teacher certification programs in environmental science and biology, and a minor in forensics.
"This is indeed a great opportunity to further enrich our science curriculum and bring strong, academically advanced students to our programs,” said Maria Kalevitch, professor of science and associate dean of the School of Engineering, Mathematics and Science. “Science education at RMU is marked by personal attention, small class sizes, state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and an emphasis on technical skills.”
