RMU Women Surge Past Maine in 5-4 Victory

Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University (RMU) Colonials women's ice hockey team earned their second straight win against the Maine Black Bears over the weekend, topping the Black Bears 5-4 on Saturday afternoon in a come-from-behind victory at the Robert Morris University Island Sports Center.

The Colonials recorded sell-out crowds in both Skate for the Cure contests against Maine. All proceeds earned in the weekend’s games, along with $4,000 already collected by the Colonials, will be donated to a breast cancer research foundation.

The Black Bears opened up the first period firing shot after shot at the Colonial net. At 4:15, Junior Jenna Ouellette fired a shot that trickled in between the legs of sophomore goalie Daneca Butterfield (Kronau, Saskatchewan /Notre Dame Hounds). At 10:52 Maine increased their lead to two with a goal by freshman Dawn Sullivan.

The Colonials answered back less than two minutes later, when sophomore Sara O’Malley (Guelph, Ontario/Hamilton Hawks) grabbed a pass from freshman Brianna Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario/NCCP Raiders) and found an opening in Maine goalie Candice Currier’s net. The first period ended in Maine’s favor 2-1.

The Colonials continued to rally their way back, as sophomore Whitney Pappas (Evergreen, Colo./Belle Tire) recorded her first goal of the season at 10:06 in the second period to knot things up 2-2. Maine responded with a goal of its own, as junior Elyce Thomas captured a goal, which was also her first of the season, to regain the lead 3-2.

The offensive pair of O’Malley and Delaney charged again, as O’Malley captured her second goal of the game off another assist by Delaney to tie things up once again and end the period with a 3-3 deadlock.

Maine immediately took charge in the third period, as sophomore Jennie Gallo placed the puck in the net just 21 seconds into action. Pappas’ intense play throughout the game landed her another goal at 5:18 in the period to tie things up for a third time. Delaney earned her third assist of the game on the play, while senior Kristen Miles (London, Ontario/London Devilettes) also added an assist.

At 11:41 freshman Kathryn Stack (Edmonton, Alberta/Edmonton Thunder) took a shot from just inside the blue line that deflected off senior Megan Picinic’s (Cliffside Park, N.J./Princeton Tigerlilies) stick and into the net to win the game.

RMU was outshot 21 to 28, with Butterfield ending the contest with 27 saves to Currier’s 23. The Colonials improve to 7-8-1 overall, while the Black Bears drop to 3-11-0. The Colonials will take a couple weeks off before they travel to Fairfield, Conn., to take on Sacred Heart on Dec. 16 and Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
