Colonial Theatre Presents "Godspell"

Moon Township, Pa. -- The Robert Morris University (RMU) Colonial Theatre will perform a revival of “Godspell” from Feb. 18-21 at 8 p.m. and Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. in Massey Theater at RMU’s Moon Township campus.

This show marks the fifth anniversary of the original production, which was the first Colonial Theatre performance in more than a decade. Since then, 25 fully produced shows have taken place, Colonial Theatre expanding and intensifying with each passing year.

When Colonial Theatre was revived, RMU students had little theater experience, but the program was nonetheless embraced by students, the university’s administration and the local community. The original “Godspell” production and the subsequent “Footloose” were sold out for their entire run.

“It's amazing how much magic can be created by ambitious students. Our students’ ambition always exceeds their talent, no matter how talented they are,” said John Locke, assistant director for student life at RMU.

Ken Gargaro, coordinator of the Colonial Theatre program, started out as a hired hand for the first “Godspell” production, but is now an assistant professor of communication at RMU. He also is the founding director of Pittsburgh Musical Theatre, which has featured RMU students in starring roles in several of its productions.

“That partnership allows students to participate in professional productions Downtown and then return to RMU with an increased skill and knowledge for RMU productions,” said Gargaro. “There has always been a rich source of talent. Now there is just more awareness of it.”

Gargaro helped shape the theatre program at RMU, which now offers a theater concentration for its communication major and a theater minor..
