Pittsburgh -- The Robert Morris University women's basketball team will travel to Olean, N.Y., to take on the St. Bonaventure Bonnies in the first round of the Postseason Women's National Invitation Tournament on Thursday, March 18. The Colonials, 23-8, are appearing in the tournament for the first time in team history after capturing the Northeast Conference regular season championship.
Robert Morris has now earned berths into national tournaments in four consecutive seasons, beginning with its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2007. Another trip to the "Big Dance" followed in 2008 before the Colonials accepted an invitation to the Preseason WNIT last season.
RMU is led by the NEC Player and Defensive Player of the Year, senior guard Angela Pace (Westchester, N.Y. / Woodlands (Monroe College)). Pace averages 15.3 points per game and 7.1 rebounds a contest while shooting 48.1 percent from the field. NEC All-Rookie team selection Vega Gimeno-Martinez (Valencia, Spain / Spanish National U-20) adds 10.2 points to a balanced scoring attack that features six players who average over 7.3 points per game.
The Colonials and Bonnies have met just four times with the gang from Olean holding a 3-1 advantage in the series which has been idle since 1993. The home team has won every meeting in this short series that began in 1988.
The Bonnies sit at 22-9 after finishing fourth in the Atlantic 10 with a 9-5 conference mark. They are led by All-Atlantic 10 First Team member Dana Mitchell who averages 16.3 points per game, shooting over 51 percent from the field. Megan Van Tatenhove, an All-A-10 honorable mention selection, adds 11.6 points.
Tip-off for Thursday's match-up will be announced Tuesday, March 16.
