English as a Second Language
This fully online certificate program in English as a Second Language prepares teachers to promote the academic success of English language learners and prepares candidates for the ESL program specialist certificate awarded by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
The 18-credit program combines instructional planning, teaching practices, and professionalism with a historical exploration of immigration and cultural perspectives. This helps ESL teachers to work effectively with families and communities and establish learning goals and assessment measures that are appropriate for each individual student. Students complete field experiences, including at least one in a public school setting, aligned with competencies in the coursework. Research on the structure and nature of language is utilized to give future teachers professional experience in helping their students adjust to the challenges of learning a new language.
