Commencement: Undergraduate

There will be no rehearsal for the commencement ceremony. Please read the following instructions carefully to fully understand the day’s agenda.

Ceremony Information

Graduation Candidates

General Standards Regarding Academic Regalia

  • The cap is worn straight, the shallower part in front.
  • Degree candidates should wear their tassels over the right side of the cap, above the right eye. Tassels will be moved to the left side after candidates receive the graduation charge from the president.
  • Men should remove caps during the national anthem.

Academic Apparel

If you ordered your cap and gown prior to the deadline, you should receive your apparel before commencement day.

To be comfortable, we suggest that you do not wear a jacket underneath your gown. Women are advised to leave purses with guests or at home.

Your academic apparel (cap, gown and tassel) is yours to keep after the ceremony. If you have any questions about your regalia, please contact the RMU bookstore at (412) 262-2757 or bookstoremgr@rmu.edu.

Diploma Distribution

Approximately 6-8 weeks after the ceremony, all May 2020 degree recipients will receive their diploma via U.S. mail.

Robing & Assembly

All graduating students must report to the practice gym between 8:15am and 9:00am on Saturday, May 9 for robing and assembly.

Name Cards

Bachelor’s degree candidates must pick up their name cards in the practice gym. Your card designates your particular school of study and honors earned. Be sure to line up in the area designated by your card. Volunteers will be there to assist you.

Your card will be handed to the announcer so your name may be pronounced accurately over the public address system. Please keep the card easily accessible for that purpose.

A faculty marshal will be present in each area to assist the candidates and lead them in the procession to their seating area.

Guests

All guests should go directory to the UPMC Event Center.  Do not accompany your graduate to the assembly area before or after the ceremony.  Guests may not approach the stage to take photos or video while there ceremony is in progress.

For families with young children:

Young children may become restless during the ceremony. You may exit the ceremony to the lobby area.

Faculty

Faculty should assemble on the third floor.

Ticket Information

At Senior Salute, four (4) commencement tickets were distributed to each undergraduate student who purchased a cap and gown.  All students must purchase a cap and gown at the Barnes and Noble Bookstore before tickets are distributed. The contact information for the RMU bookstore is (412) 262-2757 or bookstoremgr@rmu.edu.

For those who could not attend Senior Salute, you may pick up your tickets at the Office of the Registrar, Patrick Henry 200.

Now that Senior Salute has concluded, the commencement committee determined that additional tickets are available.  We created a Ticket Waitlist site via Sentry. Students can submit a request for three additional tickets.  This does not guarantee all students will receive three additional tickets.

If you will not be using your four originally allotted tickets, we ask that you please return them to the Office of the Registrar so they may be distributed to others. If you would like additional tickets, please submit your request for extra tickets using the links. We will respond to your request within 10 days.

The Ticket Waitlist site will open Wednesday, April 1st at 8am to Monday, April 13th at 8am.

You will be contacted via RMU email only about how to obtain surplus tickets.  Please click on Ticket Waitlist to take you to Sentry.

Please Note: Infants under the age of two that will not be occupying a seat do not require a ticket. However, any infant in a car seat that occupies a seat must have a ticket. Car seats are not permitted to block the aisle.  Strollers, baby transports, prams and buggies are not permitted in the arena.

Tickets are not to be sold or compensated.
