Student Health Insurance

Robert Morris University requires that all traditional undergraduate students, both full and part time, carry health insurance that is comparable to the established RMU Student Plan provided by UPMC Health Plan. Additionally, graduate students in the following groups are also required to carry comparable coverage:

  • Club Sport Athletes
  • Intercollege Athletes
  • International Students
  • Nursing Students
  • Residential Students

Please note that cross registered students are not permitted to participate in the RMU Student Health Insurance plan.

RMU SHIP Waiver Requirements

Students should ensure that their alternate coverage meets the following criteria:

Non-Athletes may waive the SHIP if their current insurance meets the following requirements:

  • Your coverage must be fully compliant with the Affordable Care Act*
  •  Your coverage must be underwritten and administered in the United States
  •  Your coverage must have a U.S. based claims processing center that pays providers directly, in United States Dollars (USD)
  •  Your coverage must span the entire student registration period (no short-term policies)
  •  Has unlimited annual and lifetime benefits (i.e. no policy maximum)
  •  Your coverage must provide access to local doctors, specialists, hospitals, and other healthcare providers within 50 miles of campus. These providers are considered ‘In-Network’ Out of state Medicaid is acceptable as long as network provider is available within 50 miles of campus.
  •  Covers all of the following with no session limits (a policy that covers only emergency/urgent care in the location where the student is studying does not meet this requirement): routine, urgent and emergent care for both inpatient and outpatient medical care; mental health treatment; and alcohol and substance abuse treatment.

Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plans are acceptable only when a student is physically located in the provider network service area (while on campus) or has an “away from home” rider or guest membership that assures coverage commensurate with minimum requirements.

You will need to waive the Robert Morris University SHIP every year you attend. If at any time throughout the school year you change insurance companies, a new waiver must be submitted within 30 days of the change to rmuship@hubinternational.com

NCAA Division I Athletes:

Athletes (both Global and Domestic) have additional waiver requirements that their insurance must meet, in order to participate in NCAA Athletic Programs:

  • Your coverage must be fully compliant with the Affordable Care Act*
  • Your coverage must be underwritten and administered in the United States
  • Your coverage must have a U.S. based claims processing center that pays providers directly, in United States Dollars (USD)
  • Has unlimited annual and lifetime benefits (i.e., no policy maximum)
  • Your insurance must not exclude coverage for intercollegiate sports injuries
  • Will be in force for the duration of your time as a student for the academic year/semester (whichever applies). Short-term policies are not acceptable
  • Covers all of the following with no session limits (a policy that covers only emergency/urgent care in the location where the student is studying does not meet this requirement): routine, urgent, and emergent care for both inpatient and outpatient medical care; mental health treatment; and alcohol and substance abuse treatment
  • Your coverage must not have a deductible exceeding $5,000 Individual / $10,000 Family
  • Your coverage must have a Co-insurance limit not exceeding 80/20
  • Your coverage should provide access to UPMC Health Plan doctors, specialists, hospitals, and other healthcare providers in the Western Pennsylvania Area. These providers are considered ‘In-Network’. Robert Morris University Athletics partners with UPMC Sports Medicine for all team care.

As an athlete, if you are currently covered by an HMO (Health Maintenance Organization), you must provide proof of ’Away From Home Coverage’ or ’Guest Membership’. Students are required to have insurance that pays as Primary when Secondary coverage is present. Medicaid, TRICARE, or any other Government Insurance program is among those policies that will not pay claims as Primary, and are therefore not eligible for waivers. No exceptions will be made.

If at any time during the school year you change insurance companies, a new waiver must be submitted within 30 days of the change to rmuship@hubinternational.com

Robert Morris University has partnered with HUB International to assist us with the administration of our student health insurance program. As an RMU student, you are required to provide proof of health insurance that meets the requirements of the above minimum requirements each year that you are enrolled. If unable to do so, you will be automatically enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) which is provided by UPMC Health Plan and the annual cost for the coverage will remain on your RMU student account and is your responsibility to pay.

What is SHIP?

The Robert Morris Student Health Insurance Plan, provided by UPMC Health Plan, is a one-year term of insurance (August 1, 2026 – July 31, 2027) that offers national comprehensive coverage, so you are covered at home and at school. Coverage can begin on alternate dates for students who enroll for 2nd 8 week terms, as well as in the spring semester.

Who is HUB International?

HUB International's Student Health & Wellness Division is a Health Insurance Administrator and Robert Morris has partnered with HUB to facilitate the health insurance waiver process. They collect and review the insurance information and serve as the liaison between the insurance carrier, the University and our students. They can also provide healthcare advocacy and assistance for students enrolled in the RMU Student Plan provided by UPMC Health Plan.

How do I complete this requirement?

Each year, you must log on to the HUB International portal website and make your choice. You have two options to satisfy this requirement. Please note that calls to university offices, verbal statements, and written correspondence to the university do not constitute waivers of coverage. The HUB International portal will be available on June 1, 2026 for the upcoming 2026-2027 academic year. Waivers will be accepted until August 31, 2026.

Visit the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) Portal

https://ship.hubinternational.com/rmu

  1. Enroll in the SHIP. The charge for the coverage will remain on your RMU student account and your enrollment with the carrier will be processed. The annual plan year is from August 1, 2026 through July 31, 2027.
  2. Waive the SHIP with your own insurance that meets the university’s requirements. Provide your insurance information to HUB International, and once reviewed and approved, the annual charge for the student health insurance will be removed from your RMU student account.
