Former RMU Soccer Player In Polish First Division
 
Former Robert Morris University men’s soccer player Joe Di Buono ’04 was signed to a contract to play for Polonia Warszawa of the of the Polish First Division through the remainder of the 2005-06 season with an option for the 2006-07 season. Di Buono has started in the last five matches at defensive midfield since signing with the team.

“I didn’t come here for the glory or the money,” said DiBuono following his signing. “I want to show myself in the best possible light and help save this team from relegation.”

Polonia Warszawa is currently 16th in the 16-team first division and will have to move up to at least 13th in order to avoid being relegated to the Polish Second Division. At the end of each season, the top three teams in the Second Division move up to First Division while the bottom three teams in the First Division are dropped to the Second Division. The Blackshirts are 3-3-11 (12 points), five points behind Łeczna and Arka and six points back of 13th place Belchatów.

Immediately following his graduation from Robert Morris, Di Buono became the sixth Robert Morris player since 2002 to be drafted when he was selected in the first round of the USL’s College Player Draft and was the 11th overall pick, going to the Montreal Impact. He became the first Colonial to be drafted by two teams in the same year when the Major Indoor Soccer League’s Cleveland franchise picked him in their 2005 draft. Di Buono was a 2004 NSCAA / adidas Mid-Atlantic Regional All-American and a team captain in 2004.

As a Colonial, he finished third in the Northeast Conference in 2004 with 17 points on six goals and five assists, scoring all of his points in the last 14 games of the season. He finished fifth in the conference in goal scoring and fourth in assists. A first team All-NEC selection, the forward was held scoreless for the first five games of the season before exploding for 17 points in final 14 games. His best game came in a 4-2 win at Mount St. Mary’s when he scored two goals and added an assist for five points.
