Jackson Garners Second Straight NEC Player of the Week Accolade

Senior forward A.J. Jackson (Monessen, Pa. / Monessen) of the Robert Morris University men’s basketball team garnered his second straight weekly honor from the Northeast Conference Monday, as he was named the Choice Hotels NEC Player of the Week. Jackson garners the accolade after averaging 20.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 1.0 assists in RMU victories over New Hampshire (11/21/06) and Maine (11/26/06) last week. The pair of wins bumped the Colonials to 4-0 to start the 2006-07 campaign, the first time in the program’s 31-year history Robert Morris has won four straight games to open the season.

Jackson also shot 53.8 percent (7-for-13) from beyond the arc and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line in RMU’s two wins. In a 77-64 win over New Hampshire at the Charles L. Sewall Center, Jackson scored all 20 of his points in the second half while adding eight rebounds. Against the Wildcats Jackson hit on six of his 10 field goal attempts in the second stanza, including a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the three-point line.

In RMU’s 55-43 victory at Maine Jackson notched his second double-double in as many road games on the season and 16th of his career by scoring 21 points while grabbing 12 rebounds. He also added three assists and two steals in the win. In the second half against the Black Bears Jackson was crucial for Robert Morris, hitting back-to-back three-pointers and assisting on a layup by junior guard Tony Lee (Boston, Mass. / Charlestown) that helped the Colonials turn a one-point advantage into a nine-point edge, 40-31.

On the young season Jackson leads the NEC in both scoring (24.0 ppg) and rebounding (10.8 rpg) while ranking first in free-throw percentage (.905), fifth in three-point field goals (2.75 per game) and ninth in three-point field goal percentage (.440). Jackson is the first Colonial in school history to open a season with four straight 20+ scoring games.

Under the direction of sixth-year head coach Mark Schmidt, Robert Morris travels across town for its next contest, squaring off with No. 3 Pittsburgh Wednesday, Nov. 29, for a 7:30 p.m. game at the Petersen Events Center.
