Benson's Three-Pointer Lifts Quinnipiac to 88-85 Victory over Robert Morris
 
Craig Benson’s three-pointer, his seventh of the game, on a feed from Rob Monroe with less than a second left lifted visiting Quinnipiac to an 88-85 victory over the Robert Morris University men’s basketball team Saturday night at the Charles L. Sewall Center. The defeat drops RMU’s overall record on the 2004-05 campaign to 2-4, including 0-1 in Northeast Conference play, while the Bobcats improved to 4-2 and 1-0 in league action.

Quinnipiac erased a 13-point second half deficit with a 32-19 run over the last 10:36 of the game to claim the victory. Trailing 15-11 in the first half, Robert Morris used a 15-5 run to open a 26-20 advantage at the 6:36 mark of the first half, as senior guard Maurice Carter (Richmond, Va. / Eleanor Roosevelt-Md.) scored eight points during the spurt, including a pair of three-pointers. The Bobcats answered with a 12-1 run to take a 32-27 lead, but the Colonials responded with a 12-2 run in the last 3:13 of the first half to take a 39-34 advantage into halftime, as senior center Mark Anderson (Topeka, Kansas / Coffeyville C.C.) scored four points and senior guard Christopher Gooden (Houston, Texas / Eastfield J.C.) and junior forward Joseph Ison (Baltimore, Md. / Labette C.C.) each scored three points.

In the second half Robert Morris upped its lead to 54-46 with 15:37 to play with a 6-0 spurt, bolstered by a pair of baskets from senior forward Chaz McCrommon (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Schenley). Quinnipiac cut the lead to 55-53 with 14:01 to play, but RMU used a 14-3 run to take its biggest lead of the game, 69-56, at the 10:36 mark of the second half. The Bobcats slowly chipped away, cutting the lead to 71-68 with 7:29 left after a three-pointer from Benson.

The Colonials were able to push their lead back to eight, 80-72, after a three-pointer from Carter, but Quinnipiac scored the game’s next seven points to close within 80-79 at the 3:09 mark of the second half. Benson hit a three-pointer for the Bobcats, while Rob Monroe chipped in with four points. After a jumper by Carter staked RMU to an 82-79 lead, Monroe’s three-pointer knotted the score at 82 with 2:43 to go. Benson then gave Quinnipiac its first lead since the first half, 85-82, with a three-pointer, but Robert Morris tied it after a jumper from McCrommon and a 1-for-2 showing at the free-throw line by Ison with 32 seconds to play. Quinnipiac then ran the drive and kick play to Benson, who hit the three-pointer from the right wing with less than a second left to lift the Bobcats to the win.

Robert Morris was led by Carter, who finished 9-of-13 from the field, including 5-for-8 from beyond the three-point arc, for 30 points. McCrommon added 22 for the Colonials, while Ison scored 15 points off the bench and Anderson finished with 10 points. Carter also finished with a team-high eight rebounds and added five assists, while McCrommon finished with three blocks.

Quinnipiac was led by Monroe, who finished with 32 points and eight assists, while Benson added 27 points on 9-of-16 shooting, including a 7-for-11 evening from beyond the three-point arc.

Robert Morris returns to action Tuesday, Dec. 7, when it travels to Lewisburg, Pa., for a 7:30 p.m. game at Bucknell.

Notes: Robert Morris shot 52.5 percent from the field (32-for-61), while Quinnipiac hit 46 percent (29-of-63) of its shots … The Bobcats hit 14 of their 31 three-point attempts, led by Benson with seven and Monroe with five … The Colonials hit 7-of-18 three-point attempts, led by Carter with five … RMU won the battle of the boards, 38-36, including a 10-9 advantage on the offensive glass … In his last four games since going 0-for-8 from the field @ Ohio State, Carter is averaging 19.3 points per game and is shooting 61.9 percent (26-for-42) from the field.
