This course satisfies part of the Communication Skills graduation requirement. This class has clinical practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. and class on the Moon Campus on Wednesdays and Fridays. There are also some additional community experiences. Students who schedule this course should also schedule a section of NURS0425 (sections A-D)This section is Communication Skills intensive. Communication Skills I-V must be completed before taking this course.

Course Description
TThis course focuses on the nursing care of clients with mental health problems. Classroom learning provides an introduction to developmental, psychological, and biological theories in order to enhance understanding regarding the various etiologies of mental illness. Major psychiatric illnesses that are seen throughout the lifespan as well as treatment options available are addressed. In the clinical setting, students apply classroom knowledge utilizing the nursing process through assessment, identification of nursing diagnoses, as well as implementation of a plan of care to promote optimal functioning of the client with mental illness. (3 lecture, 2 lab)
